The world is a marvelous place because of its diversity. And in an ever connected and globalized world, experiences and lessons learned can be shared across borders as if they don’t exist. This is particularly true in BIM, where international experience can be leveraged locally to benefit local, provincial, state and national projects.

It’s in that context that I decided to discuss the topic of what Canada can learn from the UK in BIM with an international BIM professional and friend:

    Anneka Chand, architectural technologist

In this video, we discuss a comparison between the UK and Canada in BIM aspects on many levels, including the following topics:

    • Anneka’s background and career path
    • The market: UK vs Canada
      • BIM adoption
      • BIM consultants
      • BIM project requirements
      • BIM in government-mandated projects
    • BIM uses: UK vs Canada
      • BIM standards
      • BIM in design
      • BIM in construction
      • BIM in operations
    • Top 3 lessons Canada can learn from the UK
    • General impressions about the UK vs Canada
    • Final thoughts by Anneka

    Final thoughts

Anneka’s insight definitely presents some food for thought on how Canada can catch up to the United Kingdom and implement standards in a more official and rigorous way. There’s no doubt that Canada has a lot to learn from other countries that are more advanced in BIM, which can be to our advantage as we avoid any pitfalls that they experienced.

As Sir Winston Churchill once said:

My tastes are simple: I am easily satisfied with the best.

So why settle for average or mediocre? We, Canadians, have all the resources we need to excel at many things, including the field of BIM in the AEC industry. It’s time to stop play catch up games and to start leading in this sector globally.

Thank you for taking the time to watch this video podcast and I’ll see you again soon.
